Characteristics

CAK90 is a premium, mission-critical component. Its characteristics are a carefully engineered balance of the high energy density of tantalum, the electrical robustness of a liquid electrolyte, and the mechanical reliability of a hermetically sealed axial package.

High profile applications: CAK90 can be used in very sophisticated areas like the following:

Military & Aerospace: Avionics, radar, missile guidance, communication systems.

Downhole Drilling & Geothermal: Electronics for equipment exposed to extreme temperatures (>175°C).

Medical Implants & Surgical Tools: Where long-term, predictable performance is vital.

Satellites & Spacecraft: Radiation-tolerant versions are available.

High-Temperature Industrial Controls: Power supplies, motor drives in severe environments.

Shelf time and service time: If kept in good conditions, CAK90 capacitors can be stored for more than 10 years without significant degradation. The service time can be as long as 10,000 hours to 20,000 hours at maximum 125°C.

Military Standard Compliant: Conforms to very strict Chinese military standard due to its high reliability and radiation resistance.

Reverse Voltage Tolerance: A unique and critical feature. Most CAK90 capacitors are rated to withstand a limited reverse voltage (typically 0.5V to 1.0V DC) without damage. This is hard to realize for solid tantalum capacitors.

FAQ

Q1: Do CAK90 capacitors have a shelf life? Do they need "re-forming"?

A1: The shelf time is quite long. The hermetic seal prevents electrolyte drying. They can sit for 10-15 years without significant degradation. If a capacitor has been stored for an extremely long time (for instance more than 15 years) at high temperature, a slow voltage ramp-up (re-forming) will be recommended in limited applications. For most applications, it's not required.

Q2. Can you tell where CAK90 capacitors are commonly used?

A2: Military/Aerospace: Flight controls, radar, communication systems.
Downhole Drilling: Electronics in extreme temperature and pressure environments.
Medical: Implantable devices and life-support equipment.
Satellite/Space: Radiation-hardened versions are available.
High-Temperature Industrial: Power supplies for oil/gas, geothermal.

Q3: What is the typical operating temperature range for a CAK90 capacitor?

A3: The standard range is from -55°C to +125°C. With significant voltage derating, some can operate briefly up to +200°C (normally in downhole drilling). Always check the derating curve in the datasheet-operating at full voltage at high temperatures will destroy the capacitor.
