The construction of a tantalum capacitor is based on a simple layered structure that allows it to store a large amount of electrical charge in a small size.
First, tantalum powder is pressed into a small pellet to form the anode. This pellet has a very large surface area, which helps increase the capacitance. Next, the pellet is coated with a very thin layer of tantalum oxide. This oxide layer acts as the dielectric, which separates the electrical charges. Because this layer is extremely thin, the capacitor can store more charge in less space.
A conductive material (such as manganese dioxide or a conductive polymer) is then applied over the oxide layer to form the cathode. This layer allows current to flow properly within the capacitor. After that, carbon and metal layers are added to improve electrical contact, and leads or terminals are attached for connection to a circuit. Lastly, the capacitor is sealed in a protective case, frequently molded plastic for surface-mount devices.
Axial Tantalum Capacitor Precautions
Selection and Parameter Matching
During the selection phase, the circuit's operating voltage, ripple current, ambient temperature, and space limitations should be fully considered. Axial tantalum capacitors are polarized components; the positive and negative terminals must be strictly distinguished.
Soldering and Assembly Process
Axial tantalum capacitors are mostly soldered using through-hole mounting. During soldering, the soldering iron temperature and dwell time should be controlled. A temperature between 260℃ and 300℃ is recommended, with a single-point soldering time not exceeding 3 seconds, to avoid thermal stress cracking of the internal dielectric layer or damage to the self-healing function caused by high temperatures.
Layout and Heat Dissipation Design
In circuit layout, axial tantalum capacitors should be placed as close as possible to the noise source or load to shorten lead lengths and reduce parasitic inductance, ensuring effective high-frequency filtering or decoupling.
Usage and Protection
Welding, plugging, or replacing components while the power is on is strictly prohibited to prevent instantaneous large current surges from damaging the dielectric layer. Unused capacitors should be short-circuited between their leads to prevent electrostatic discharge and breakdown. For high-voltage applications (≥50 V), it is recommended to connect a current-limiting resistor in series with the circuit (approximately 10 times the capacitor's ESR) to suppress the destructive effects of surge current.
