Description

A CA42 dipped tantalum capacitor produced by BEC is a reliable, through-hole electrolytic capacitor by using tantalum metal for high volumetric efficiency. It is featured for stable performance, low leakage and long life. It is encapsulated in flame-retardant epoxy for protection. Although though-hole applications become less and less in today's industry, it is still ideal for filtering, decoupling, and power supplies in electronics like TVs, computers, and medical devices. You can also see it in the industry of telecom and military. As it has positive side and negative side, it requires a careful handling during usage. There will be significant marking on the body to show which is the positive side.

Characteristics

High Capacitance Density: Similar to other tantalum capacitor, they offer high capacitance per unit volume in the through-hole format.

Stable Parameters: Good capacitance stability over a wide temperature range (commonly -55°C to +125°C) and low leakage current (superior to polymer tantalum capacitors in this regard).

Frequency Response: Moderate ESR and impedance. Performance degrades at very high frequencies (MHz+ range) due to lead inductance and internal construction. Not as good as low-ESR surface-mount counterparts.

Voltage Range: Typically available in low to medium voltage ranges, commonly from 2.5V to 50VDC. Higher voltages than equivalent polymer types.

Wide Temperature Range: Typically rated for -55°C to +125°C operation without significant degradation.

Moisture Resistance: The epoxy coating provides good protection against humidity and minor mechanical stress.

Long Shelf Life: No degradation in storage when kept within specified environmental conditions.

FAQ

Q1: What is the typical capacitance and voltage range?

A1: Common capacitance ranges from 0.1µF to 0µF. Common voltage ratings range from 2.5V to 50V DC, with some specialized parts up to 100V (rarely seen). Higher capacitance usually comes in larger case sizes.

Q2: Why is the ESR value higher than that of a polymer tantalum capacitor?

A2: The cathode is manganese dioxide (MnO₂), which has significantly lower electrical conductivity than the conductive polymer used in polymer tantalum capacitors. This results in higher ESR.

Q3: How stable is the capacitance over temperature and time.

A3: Very stable. Typical tolerance is ±10% over -55°C to +125°C. They have negligible aging (unlike MLCCs) and no dry-out (unlike aluminum electrolytics), leading to excellent long-term stability.

Q4: What do they look like when they fail?

A4: In a catastrophic failure, the epoxy coating may crack, vent with smoke/flame, or explode. In less severe cases, short-circuit may occur. Always inspect for a cracked, charred, or bulging epoxy coat.

Q5: Do they have a shelf life or storage requirements?

A5: They have an excellent shelf life (decades) if stored in a cool, dry environment. However, the epoxy can absorb moisture. If exposed to high humidity, follow the manufacturer's Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) guidelines, which may require baking before reflow (if used in a reflow process for mixed-technology boards).
