FVE Standard SMD Electrolytic Capacitor
Details
A FVE standard SMD electrolytic capacitor produced by BEC is a surface-mount version of the traditional through-hole electrolytic capacitor. It's engineered for reflow soldering to printed circuit boards in modern surface-mount technology assembly. It retains the core electrochemical energy-storage structure of electrolytic capacitors (anode, cathode, electrolytic medium, dielectric oxide layer) but features a compact, flat package with metalized terminations for direct PCB mounting—eliminating the radial or axial leads of through-hole variants.

Description

A FVE standard SMD electrolytic capacitor produced by BEC is a surface-mount version of the traditional through-hole electrolytic capacitor. It's engineered for reflow soldering to printed circuit boards in modern surface-mount technology assembly. It retains the core electrochemical energy-storage structure of electrolytic capacitors (anode, cathode, electrolytic medium, dielectric oxide layer) but features a compact, flat package with metalized terminations for direct PCB mounting-eliminating the radial or axial leads of through-hole variants. As a polarized, high-capacitance passive component, it is a staple in SMT electronics for power-related functions (smoothing, decoupling, bulk energy storage) where MLCCs cannot provide sufficient capacitance density.

Characteristics

Industry-Standard Sizes: EIA-specified diameter*height (D×H) in millimeters - the universal footprint for SMT PCBs:

Ultra-low profile: 4×5mm, 5×5mm (height ≤5mm - for wearables/smartphones)

Standard: 6.3×7.5mm, 8×10mm, 10×12mm (for consumer/industrial electronics)

Large: 12.5×20mm, 18×25mm (for high-cap/high-voltage power supplies)

Terminations: Flat, nickel-tin plated copper end tabs - designed for direct soldering to SMD PCB pads (no leads). Pad layouts follow EIA standards for universal compatibility.

Markings: Laser-printed on the body - capacitance (e.g., 100μF), voltage rating (e.g., 25V), tolerance (M), negative stripe (-), manufacturer logo, and date code.

High Capacitance & Voltage Range.

Value Range: typically from 0.1µF up to several thousand µF (e.g., 6800µF). They fill the gap between high-value MLCCs (rarely >100µF) and larger can capacitors.

Voltage Range: Common ratings from 2.5V to 100V+, suitable for standard power rails (3.3V, 5V, 12V, 24V, 48V).

FAQ

Q1: What is "ripple current" rating and why does it matter?

A1: Ripple current is the AC current the capacitor can handle from charging/discharging in power supply applications. Exceeding this rating causes overheating and premature failure. In high-current applications (like switching power supplies), this is often the limiting factor, not just capacitance/voltage.

Q2: How does temperature affect lifespan?

A2: Temperature is the #1 factor in capacitor lifespan! The 10°C Rule (Arrhenius Law) applies:
For every 10°C increase, lifespan is halved
For every 10°C decrease, lifespan is doubled
Example: A 2000h @ 105°C capacitor:
At 95°C: ~4000 hours
At 85°C: ~8000 hours
At 105°C: 2000 hours (rated)
At 115°C: ~1000 hours

Q3: What are "audio/video grade" SMD electrolytic capacitors?

A3: They should have the following features:
Lower distortion specifications
Tighter tolerance
Sometimes different dielectric materials
Debatable audible difference in most circuits

Q4: What's the shelf life for a FVE standard SMD electrolytic capacitor?

A4: If stored well, 2 to 5 years is typical shelf life.
