A NP non-polar low radial electrolytic capacitor (also called bipolar electrolytic capacitor) produced by BEC is a specialized through-hole (THT) variant of the standard radial electrolytic capacitor, engineered for unpolarized operation-it can be connected to AC circuits, unregulated DC circuits with reverse voltage transients, or bipolar DC signals (no fixed anode/cathode requirement), unlike standard/polarized radial electrolytics that demand strict DC polarity alignment. it is constructed to eliminate polarity dependence while preserving the key advantage of electrolytic technology: high capacitance density at a low cost for THT circuits. It is the only electrolytic capacitor suitable for AC or bipolar DC applications

Characteristics
Core Design Foundation for Bipolar Operation
All bipolar electrolytic capacitors share a symmetrical internal construction-the critical difference from polarized variants that enables non-polar operation, and the source of their minor performance tradeoffs:
Dual-Anode Foils: Two high-purity aluminum foils are both electrochemically etched (for high surface area) and anodized (to form a thin, insulating aluminum oxide dielectric layer) - polarized electrolytics only anodize one foil as a fixed anode.
Bidirectional Polarity Switching: When AC/bipolar DC is applied, the foil with the positive instantaneous potential acts as the anode (its oxide dielectric stores charge), and the opposing foil acts as the cathode (the electrolyte facilitates ionic current). This switching happens instantaneously with signal polarity.
Symmetrical Core & Packaging: The dual foils + electrolyte-impregnated separator are rolled into a symmetrical core, sealed in a cylindrical aluminum can (radial) or metalized housing, with identical terminations (no visual polarity cues).

FAQ
Q1: What is a non-polar electrolytic capacitor?
A1: A bipolar electrolytic capacitor is an electrolytic component engineered for unpolarized operation-it has no fixed anode/cathode and can safely handle AC signals, bipolar DC, or unregulated DC with reverse voltage transients. Unlike standard polarized electrolytics (DC-only, strict polarity required), it uses a symmetrical dual-anode aluminum foil construction that lets the foils switch anode/cathode roles instantaneously with signal polarity.
Q2: Does a bipolar electrolytic capacitor have any polarity markings?
A2: No-this is the most obvious visual distinction from polarized electrolytics. Bipolar variants have no negative stripe, no +/– symbols, and identical lead lengths (no longer anode lead for a polarity cue). Only capacitance, AC voltage rating (a key identifier), package size, and temperature specs are laser-printed on the housing.
Q3: What frequency range is a bipolar electrolytic capacitor optimized for?
A3: It is engineered for low-to-mid frequency AC/bipolar DC (50Hz–20kHz)-the primary sweet spot for real-world applications:
50/60Hz: AC motor starting, mains AC power circuits.
20Hz–20kHz: Audio crossover networks, audio signal coupling/DC blocking.
It is ineffective for high-frequency AC (>100kHz)-ESR dominates impedance at these frequencies, so film/ceramic capacitors are the better choice.
